Major Holidays Equal Appliance Savings
If there’s any time to shop for appliances, it’s around major holidays. The biggest are Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veteran’s Day.
Each of these holidays fall during a time that appliance manufacturers want to clear the shelves. Many people buy/move during the summer months, so summer sales are always helpful. The summer holidays include Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Labor Day is the end of summer, giving homebuyers/homeowners one last-ditch effort to save big.
Veteran’s Day is the last big holiday before Black Friday. Retailers try to get a few more big sales before the bigger discounts of Black Friday.
Black Friday is Another Great Chance for Savings
With the help of the internet, you can get a sneak preview of Black Friday sales. Many retailers leak their ads as early as October. Plan accordingly and you could see significant savings on this popular shopping holiday. While most people think about Christmas shopping on Black Friday, you may save the most buying your appliances on this ‘holiday.’
Keep in mind, though, retailers typically limit Black Friday deals to certain hours and a small number of buyers. Plan ahead if you want to be one of them.

Watch for New Model Releases
Manufacturers often release information on the newest appliances in January. They then slowly release them to the public throughout the next few months. Right after the release, you can typically snag the ‘older model’ at a discount. Retailers need room for the newer models and may even haggle a little bit on the price.
If you love the features of the newer models, wait until they are out for a while. The demand will be high initially. As the excitement wears off, though, the demand goes down and so do the prices.
Ways to Save Money on Appliances
Besides shopping the sales, you can save money on appliances a few other ways:
- Don’t wait until the last minute – It’s easy to overspend when you desperately need a new appliance. Refrigerators are a great example. If your current model dies, you need a new one fast. If you have food about to spoil, you may jump at any sale. If you see signs of your appliance slowly dying, start shopping right away. You’ll have more time to find deals, negotiate, and make a smart purchase.
- Shop around – Don’t assume a store has the lowest price just because they advertise it. Find out for yourself. Whether you shop online or physically go to the stores, write down the prices. Some stores price match if you can prove the lower price at another store. Other stores negotiate prices, allowing you to put your own sales tactics to work and get the retailer to sell you the appliance at your desired price.
- Shop at month-end – If you can’t make one the major holiday sales, shop for appliances at the end of the month. Many salespeople work on commission. They want to make those last-ditch sales before the month ends. They may be more willing to haggle the price just to make the sale and meet their quota.
Do your homework before buying an appliance. Watch sales throughout the year so you know what to expect. When it’s time for you to buy, you’ll have a number in mind. For example, if you see great prices on the Fourth of July, but won’t move into your home until October, you won’t be ready to buy then. But, you’ll have those prices in mind and you can use them to negotiate with the salesperson.
